At Science Cafe a scientist comes and gives a short talk, in an informal environment over a coffee.  Or in this case, over a pint if you prefer, as it’s in a pub.  After a refill, there’s a question & answer session.

This month’s speaker is Dr Chris Skinner, University of Hull, Department of Geography, Environment & Earth Sciences.  The subject may be of interest, given it’s close relation to climate change, and sea level rise.

F.F.E.Y. notes: In the 2013 storm surge, flooding occurred across Humberside, and the River Hull tidal barrier was centimetres from being breached.  We are currently at 1˚C of global warming, and 0.25m of sea-level rise.  According to recent research, this has already locked in 2m of rise by 2100 (so within the lifetime of today’s children), as ice continues to melt, and we could be on track for nearly 9m.

The film takes you onto the frontlines of UK resistance in the battle to stop Fracking. It follows grandmothers (Lancashire Nanas) as they team up with younger activists (Reclaim the Power) to shut down Cuadrilla’s drilling sites. In Lancashire and Sussex trucks are occupied, drilling sites are blocked and supply chains are disrupted. Police are spending millions of pounds trying (and failing) to stop the daily protests. One man attempts to make a citizens arrest on the Prime Minister for allegedly misleading the public over this form of extreme energy extraction. The film shows the truck surfing actions which led to the controversial jailing of 3 people for protesting Fracking. The film widens the discussion to highlight the role of the media and lobby groups in shaping public perception of unconventional gas and oil exploration. We hear from energy experts, journalists and key politicians amongst the voices of local residents and councillors.

We will also have an update from a member of the local campaign against fracking, Frack Free East Yorkshire, on activity at the West Newton well site, north east of Hull, which is now live.

Environment Agency Public Drop-in Session
Rathlin Energy Seeks Variation To Environmental Permit at West Newton

“The Environment Agency is to consult on an application by Rathlin Energy (UK) Ltd to vary the conditions of its Environmental Permit at the West Newton ‘A’ well site near Burton Constable, East Riding of Yorkshire.

The company’s existing Environmental Permit was issued in April 2014 and governs activities at the well site relating to the management of wastes produced from oil and gas exploration. The permit imposes the strict conditions that Rathlin Energy must follow to protect people and the environment. It does not allow the company to carry out ‘fracking’ at the site.

The Environment Agency is now seeking views from the local community and interested groups on the company’s application for a permit variation. This proposes changes to the way tests would be carried out on an exploratory well, scheduled for drilling in early 2019, to assess its potential for oil and gas production.

A public drop-in session is also being held to allow people to find out more about the Environment Agency’s role in permitting and regulating the oil and gas industry. The event will be held on Thursday 24 January between 3.30pm and 6.30pm.at Sproatley Village Hall, Main Street, Sproatley, HU11 4PA.

Francis Lowe, Environment Manager for the Environment Agency, said:

“The regulatory controls covered by the company’s environmental permit provide a high level of protection for people and the environment. We will now assess proposals to vary the conditions of the permit to ensure that the changes proposed by Rathlin Energy continue to meet these same strict requirements.”

“We also welcome comments from the public and interested groups on local environmental factors that people feel are important.”

Campaigners who fought off extreme fossil fuel development in Australia are coming to East Yorkshire to share their experience of how local communities took on the might of the gas industry – and won.

Activists Brendan Shoebridge, Simon Clough and Ian Gaillard from northern New South Wales are screening their new documentary as part of a UK tour, and will be present for a question and answer session after the film, as well as leading a workshop beforehand.

The documentary, filmed over five years, chronicles how people in the Northern Rivers region, facing plans by Metgasco to drill for coal seam gas, organised themselves to rally in a series of peaceful blockades.

In the final confrontation, thousands gathered in the farming valley of Bentley. They faced 850 riot police who had been ordered to break up the protest. As a result of the stand-off, the state government suspended the gas company’s licences in May 2014 and a year later bought then back for $25m.

The film’s director, Brendan Shoebridge, told ABC News:

“The whole world needs to recreate what we saw at Bentley.

“There was a groove that happened and it was a phenomenal thing where an amazing tipping point occurred and that was just to save that one specific region, but the world has to get into that groove.

“I would hope the world sees it and starts to think ‘Well, how can I take a lead in this must-win battle?’”

Simon Clough, the former deputy mayor of Lismore, told ABC News he hoped the film would inspire people in the UK to “protect their land and their livelihoods”.

“This is an international and global crisis, the whole unconventional gas drilling threatens everyone’s water and everyone’s air. It’s a global problem not just for the Northern Rivers and Australia.”

They will be leading a workshop between 3 and 5pm covering strategy sessions and non-violent direct action.  All welcome.

A couple from North Yorkshire who visited fracking areas in Pennsylvania say their experiences should be a warning to Yorkshire. Joanne and Steve White retraced the journey made by their local MP Kevin Hollinrake – speaking with many of the same people – to find out what living with fracking is like from an ordinary resident’s point of view. Mr White said “We started off being completely neutral about fracking. We haven’t opposed fracking because we’re zealots and have some kind of mission. We’re just normal people who wanted to see first-hand what living alongside fracking would be like.”

Video footage of their visit has now been compiled into a short film titled “Living With Fracking”. Mr White said “We want people to watch this and make up their own minds. We think people need to have their eyes opened.”

The film is being shown at Bridlington Spa at 7:30pm on Wed 3rd August.  Entrance is free and Mr and Mrs White will be there to take part in a Q&A session afterwards to discuss their experiences.

North Yorkshire Council will decide whether fracking should go ahead in Ryedale.

Join community leaders, residents and high profile speakers outside N.Y. County Council for a day of peaceful, community-led activities standing with people in Ryedale and North Yorkshire against fracking.

The rally is part of a weekend of action celebrating 5 years of no fracking in Britain, with people across the country calling on the Government to not force fracking on any community.

Thousands of people in Ryedale have objected to fracking, and the local district council has said no. As the environmental and health risks of fracking become clearer, the case for it is falling apart. The film is being shown in Driffield at the Old Town Hall at 7pm on Monday the 14th March. Entrance is free and Mr and Mrs White will be there to take part in a Q&A session afterwards to discuss their experiences.

Meeting with Councillors on Fracking

Cancelled

Pocklington Town Council, “would like to offer the public an opportunity to attend a meeting of the council” where “they can speak about their concerns. It will not be a council meeting but will be attended by councillors.”

“The decision was made to postpone the meeting as it was proving difficult to get someone to speak about the potential benefits”

Frack Free East Yorkshire note that this is not the first time a meeting on fracking has been cancelled for this reason, and expresses disappointment at this decision.

We very much hope the meeting is re-arranged in the very near future, as gas companies must not be allowed to get away with suppressing discussion by refusing to appear in public.

In summer 2014 Rathlin Energy planned to carry out a test program in Holderness that included a mini-frack on the Bowland shale, but things did not go according to plan.  No Drill No Spill explain what happened, including 19 breaches of EA Permit in a matter of months, and just when they were due to complete the mini-frack, an emergency well shutdown.  More on the incidents page here.
